2016 Holy Land Pilgrimage

The Rt. Rev. Barry Beisner, Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California and the Rt. Rev. Greg Rickel, Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, led their second pilgrimage together to the Holy Land for bishops and clergy in The Episcopal Church in January 2016.

We make this journey well aware that the Holy Land is comprised not only of sacred places, but of living souls.

"Our personal encounters with the historical holy places of our Christian tradition have been very important to us in our own respective paths of spiritual formation," share Bishop Beisner and Bishop Rickel. "We are convinced that such a pilgrimage can be a vital part of the work of preparation for ordained ministry in our Church."

The pilgrimage began in north Israel, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, and included such highlights as Mount Tabor, Nazareth, the Mount of Beatitudes, the Jordan River, the ancient city of Hebron and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. There were also visits to Capernaum, the Western Wall and Ramallah.

"We make this journey well aware that the Holy Land is comprised not only of sacred places, but of living souls," share Bishop Beisner and Bishop Rickel. "We are especially mindful that the Christian community there is facing especially difficult challenges at this time. This pilgrimage will take care not only to visit holy sites, but to make and strengthen connections with fellow Christians there, and to support them in their ministries."
