A Christmas Message from the Bishop

A Christmas Message from the Bishop

Dear Friends in Christ:

As we come to the great celebration of the birth of Jesus, I think of the words of Thomas Merton:

If we believe in the Incarnation of the Son of God,
there should be no one on earth
in whom we are not prepared to see,
in mystery,
the presence of Christ.

Elsewhere he says that, because of the Incarnation, the Light of Christ shines in all humanity, but that there is just “no way of telling people that they are all walking around shining like the sun….” Still, our liturgy for Christmas Eve speaks of that holy night shining with the brightness of the true Light, and this Season leads us to focus on the true Light that enlightens every one of us, that shines in the darkness, and is never overcome by it. And so it seems appropriate for us to enter into this Season both expecting that we will indeed shine "like the sun,” and looking for a way to tell others that the same is true for them.

Another way to think of this truth is in the realization that the same Love that is the driving force of human history, and that moves through all creation, can be—if we choose it—the driving force of our own personal lives. (Merton again.) In Christmas, that Love takes flesh and dwells among us. It is a divine gift to us, which we have only to receive. Having received it, let us live it.

May this Holy Season be filled with experience of that Love, that Light. May we shine brightly, and help others to shine along with us. May it be a blessed Christmas to you and to all whom you love and serve.

Yours in the Love and Light of Jesus,
