A Conference for Small Churches

A Conference for Small Churches

by the Rev. Canon Britt Olson

I want to bring to your attention a wonderful opportunity for small churches in our Diocese. The revived “Start Up! Start Over!” program for congregational development is hosting a conference called New Chapter: Your Church in God’s Unfolding Story. This conference is specifically for small churches and is scheduled to take place December 1-3 in Williamsburg, VA.

Scholarships to attend this conference are available to congregations in our Diocese with the following requirements:

1. A team of at least two people must attend from your church.

2. You will need to determine an area you wish to focus on prior to the conference.

3. When you return, please complete a brief report about what resources you have received and what actions you are planning as a result.

The general rule is that the church will pay one third, the Diocese will pay one third and the individual will pay one third of the cost of registration, travel and accommodations. To apply for funds, please send your request via e-mail to the Rev. Canon Britt Olson: britt@norcalepiscopal.org. The Congregational Vitalization Committee will be making these funds available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration deadline is October 30.

More about the conference:

New Chapter features keynote speakers, workshop sessions and ample opportunities to share experiences while learning from others. It draws on the expertise of leaders with years of experience in congregational development. This compact conference offers encouragement, new ideas, and hope to those committed to the future of vibrant ministries within small congregations.”

Hosted by the Episcopal Church Office of Congregational Vitality and the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, the event features Tex Sample, an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and a prolific writer, author, and story-teller. The conference staff includes the Rev. Canon Jeunée Cunningham, congregational development for the Diocese of Southern Virginia; the Rev. Dr. Alvin Johnson, adjunct faculty with Virginia Theological Seminary; and the Rev. Dr. George Martin, author and consultant.

Registration fee includes tuition and two nights lodging at the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel in Colonial Williamsburg, VA; Thursday’s dinner and Friday’s lunch; and a complimentary breakfast. Online registration is available by clicking here.
