Bay Area Concert Organist in Eureka

by Christ Church, Eureka

The Christ Church Concert Series is pleased to present Dr. Angela Kraft Cross, organist, pianist, composer, (and eye surgeon) in concert on Wednesday, September 18, 7:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church (15th and H Streets, Eureka). The suggested donation at the door is $15.00 for individuals or $25.00 per family.

Currently the Artist in Residence at the Congregational Church of San Mateo, and staff organist at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, Dr. Kraft Cross is an active performer, both on organ and piano – concertizing across the United States as well as Canada and Europe. Her program at Christ Church will feature works for the pipe organ, including a French Romantic organ favorite, Pièce Héroïque by César Franck, the virtuosic Prelude and Fugue on BACH, by Franz Liszt, J.S. Bach’s Fantasie and Fugue in G minor, and several of her own compositions. The program will conclude with movements from two well-known works from the French Symphonic School: Symphonie I (mvt 4) by Louis Vierne and Symphonie VI (mvt 1) by Charles Marie Widor.

Dr. Kraft Cross holds degrees from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music in Organ Performance and Physics. She completed a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the College of Notre Dame with Thomas LaRatta, with whom she continues to study. In recent years, she has also studied composition with Pamela Decker, Professor of Organ and Music Theory at the University of Arizona. Dr. Kraft Cross has given concerts in venues such as Notre Dame Cathedral, St. Sulpice and the Madeleine in Paris, Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., St. Patrick's Cathedral and St. Thomas Church in New York City, Methuen Memorial Music Hall and Trinity Church in Boston, and Westminster Abbey and Southwark Cathedral in London. She has been a featured soloist with many local Bay Area ensembles as well as Seattle's Philharmonia Northwest Chamber Orchestra. In July 2011, Dr. Kraft Cross was a featured recitalist at the San Francisco American Guild of Organists Region IX Convention, premiering composer Pamela Decker's new composition Golden Gates.

She has released several CDs of both her organ and piano performances. Her recording of French organ masterpieces received critical acclaim in The American Organist (TAO) magazine: “Angela Kraft Cross is a joyful musician and an exceptional organist whose virtuoso technique and deep understanding of style and architecture provide performances that everyone interested in the organ – and in the larger musical repertoire – should want to hear” (TAO, Sept. 2009). She will have some of her CDs for sale following the concert.
In addition to her musical career, Dr. Kraft Cross retired in 2011 after having worked for 22 years as an ophthalmic surgeon at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Redwood City. She is committed to the musical education of young people and since 1997 has been instrumental in organizing an annual Organ Camp for young pianists and has served as a faculty member at regional Pipe Organ Encounters for young organists.
