Bishop's 2015 YAYA Pilgrimage

Bishop's 2015 YAYA Pilgrimage

A message from the Bishop...

Dear Friends in Christ:

Grace and peace to you. I am writing to remind you of the strong commitment that this diocese has had, and continues to have, to youth and young adult ministry, and to thank you for helping to make that a reality.

I also want to give you early notice of an event that I am working on. July 12-18, 2015, I will be leading a group of our 16-22 year-old members on a pilgrimage, the theme of which is “Freedom Ride.” We will be gathering in North Carolina with similar pilgrims from around The Episcopal Church. There, we will learn about important moments of Christian witness in the Civil Rights Movement, and we will work together to develop our own capacity to serve as ministers of Christ’s reconciliation here at home.

Pending final approval by our Board of Trustees, this diocese will provide each deanery with funds sufficient to pay the full expenses of one pilgrim. My hope is that each deanery will undertake to see that at least one person from among its congregations is chosen and sent—and also welcomed back afterwards, and given support and an opportunity to tell their story. These deanery representatives will be assured a place on the pilgrimage; additional pilgrims may be put forward by their congregations, and will be most welcome to join us as space is available. I will be personally involved with these pilgrims, not just in the time we are together next summer, but also in the important work of preparation and follow-up necessary to help make this the transformative experience I believe it can be.

I will have much more to say about this soon, but I want to get the basic concept—and the actual dates—in front of you now, at the earliest opportunity, so that you can begin to think and plan and pray about it. Please let me know your thoughts. I am especially interested to hear how this pilgrimage might be best coordinated with whatever Youth and Young Adult ministry you and your congregations are engaged with, and how I might best assist you in that ministry.

Yours in Christ,
The Rt. Rev. Barry L. Beisner
