Bishop Sends Message of Thanksgiving

Dear Friends in Christ:

This week, many of us will pray together the Collect for Thanksgiving Day. In that prayer, we do what one would expect on such an occasion: we give thanks for God’s providence to us, realized especially in “the fruits of the earth“ and “the labors of those who harvest them.” But this great prayer doesn’t stop there. It goes on to ask God’s assistance in making us faithful stewards of what God has provided, and helping us to take special care to provide for the poor in turn. In other words, we who have been so richly blessed are not permitted to be mere consumers of what God has given, but are to translate those blessings into action.

Even as we pause with grateful hearts to enjoy God’s gifts to us, we are meant to remember that those gifts are given for God’s purpose, God’s mission. May this holiday be a truly holy day for you, and may it bring a joyful renewal of commitment to our true work as disciples of Jesus Christ.

May God bless you and all whom you cherish this Thanksgiving Day.
