Bringing General Convention Back Home

Bringing General Convention Back Home

by Joyce Patterson, Member, St. John's, Roseville; Lay Deputy, 78th General Convention

The long legislative days of June 25th to July 3rd are now history, and the thousands of participants- bishops, deputies, convention staff, volunteers and vendors- are home. We elected a new Presiding Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry who became our first Presiding Bishop of color, and honored the nine-year term of office of our first female Presiding Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Katherine Jefferts Schori. Three hundred ninety-two resolutions had been filed and acted upon as well. Some became Acts of Convention, some referred to committees and some rejected, but all were reviewed with a gracious spirit of respect for the diversity of thought they represented.

We also enacted historic legislation in governance and structure, canons, liturgy, marriage, racism, substance abuse and recovery, and approved a budget supportive of new ministries that commits us to mission expansion, all of which cover just some of the areas the new Triennium will focus on.The technological innovations which allowed an “almost paperless” convention, once feared, will now be standard fare. New technology will be welcomed for 2018 with little problem.

We now move into a new phase of commitment- bringing the excitement, joy and the sense that a renewed Spirit has been reborn- back to our dioceses and parishes. All of us left with the resounding words of our Presiding Bishop-Elect Michael Curry "GO," and a resolve to get it done.

The following resolutions have been referred to dioceses from the 78th General Convention for action, consideration or information during the 2015- 2018 Triennium. The final and certified form of the legislation will be available shortly in the Journal of the 78th Convention found on the General Convention website at
