Engage in Mutual Ministry Review

Engage in Mutual Ministry Review

One of the “best practices” for healthy and vital congregations of any size is a regular process of planning and evaluating  ministry, programs and relationships.  For 15 years, annual Mutual Ministry Review (MMR) has been both an expectation and a resource for every church in the Diocese of Northern California.

MMR is designed, among other things, to “provide clergy and congregational leaders with the opportunity to assess how well they are fulfilling their responsibilities to each other and to the ministries they share,” “to establish goals for the work of the congregation for the coming year,” “to isolate areas of conflict or disappointment” that may not have been resolved, to evaluate previous goals and to clarify expectations. The results of this review will be communicated to the congregation and used to provide ongoing direction for ministry development. The Bishop will also expect to see a summary of the review.  MMR is recommended as an annual event and is not to be equated with a performance evaluation.

An outside facilitator can be helpful in fully engaging the process. We currently have a good group of trained facilitators who are willing and able to work with your congregation. Recently, the Rev. Canon Britt Olson travelled to St. Alban’s, Arcata for their annual review. After this experience, the Rev. Sara Potter reflected:

“…our experience of Mutual Ministry Reviews at Saint Alban’s has been quite positive...They are not meant to be done during times of conflict, but  doing them during more joyful periods equips us for honest discussion during more challenging times. It is rare in the life of a congregation to take the time to step back and really look at the big picture and the MMR affords that opportunity.  Our experience here has been so good that we really look forward to them.  As the Rector I know that the MMR helps me to know whether I have a good read on the congregation.  There are always some surprises—usually good—that remind me that others’ experience of the community is different than mine.  The process helps me evaluate and identify where I will put my energies in the coming year.”

A variety of resources are available to help clergy and leadership in planning for their review. These resources and more information can be found on the Mutual Ministry Review page of our website: www.norcalepiscopal.org/mutualministryreview.
