Fire Relief & Message from the Bishop

Fire Relief & Message from the Bishop

Dear Friends in Christ,

Grace and peace to you.

I am deeply grateful for your very generous response to the fire crisis in Northern California. Your many gifts to the Bishop's Discretionary Fund will enable our diocese to continue supporting ministries and relief efforts in the impacted communities. To date, over $13,000.00 has been received!

These funds allowed us, early on, to purchase a canopy for the creation of a “Quiet Space” at the main evacuation center at the Napa County Fairgrounds in Calistoga. Pictured here are the Rev. Susan Napoliello, Deacon at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Calistoga, and the Rev. Lucretia Jevene, Priest-in-Partnership at St. Brigid's Episcopal Church in Rio Vista, in the Quiet Space on Monday, September 14th. This canopy has now been handed on to a returning Lake County resident for use there.

Your donations, along with the financial support from our partner Episcopal Relief & Development, have also allowed us to place funds in the hands of our marvelous deacons, who are working with evacuees to provide gift cards for food, fuel and other basic needs. Our Discretionary Fund has also made it possible for me, personally, to deliver a supply of gift cards to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lakeport, where their Food Pantry and Thrift Store ministries have been very active, and were becoming depleted. More gift cards, particularly from the School for Deacons community and the churches of the Russian River Deanery, have since also been given to St. John’s. And I am pleased to tell you that our Diocesan Ministry Development Coordinator, Kay Rohde, is now spending a few days each week at St. John’s to assist with our efforts there.

I am also pleased to share that I have had initial conversations with my Lutheran and Methodist counterparts, and that we will soon begin the work of discerning how we can continue to be engaged beyond emergency relief efforts, and to help re-build stronger, healthier, more just and peaceful communities in areas now devastated and traumatized.

I give thanks to all who have prayed, worked and given so far. God bless you all, and guide us in our continued work.

Yours in Christ,

+Barry
