by the Rev. Debra Warwick-Sabino, Chair of the Diocesan Safe Church Program

Do you still need to complete your Safe Church Training?

Training may be done online or with a facilitator. Please see the Safe Church page of the diocesan website for a list of trainers or to take the training online. Not sure if you need training? Click here to download a PDF of the "Who Needs What Training Checklist."

There is also a new process and resources for background checks. This will keep costs down and make it easier to get background checks done in a timely manner.

Background check options:

1. Find out if your church or organization uses a data membership tracking program that offers background checks. If so, you could have the background check through that company. The standard background check consists of a SSN number trace and National Criminal Database search. A motor vehicle or credit check is indicated in some instances. One of the data membership programs that several churches use is called ACS. The cost for the background check through ACS is $13.00.

2. E-mail with your name and e-mail address indicating you need a background check. After you do this, you will receive an e-mail directing you to the Safeguard Certify website, where you can select the necessary background check. You can pay for it yourself and the report will be sent to you. It will be up to you to bring the report into your church or organization.
