Going to General Convention 2018: The Rev. Lewis Powell

(Third Clergy Delegate)

My focus is on Racial Justice and Reconciliation ... also issues that impact on indigenous people and those dealing with the Doctrine of Discovery. (According to Wikipedia, the doctrine has been primarily used to support decisions invalidating or ignoring native possession of land in favor of colonial or post-colonial governments.)

This is actually my first General Convention as a deputy. I was at one other, 2012, in Indianapolis, participating in a special worship service for indigenous peoples.

(The following from Deacon Lew's statement in the 2016 Diocesan Convention booklet.)

The most important thing that I bring to the position of General Convention Deputy is my love for Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and the Episcopal Church. I have been honored to serve in many areas of leadership in the greater Church and in the Diocese. I respect and understand the structure of the Episcopal Church, both locally and churchwide. I bring a level of tenacity and dependability to assigned positions within the Church. I was awarded the prestigious Stephen's Award by the North American Association for Deacons for Outstanding Diaconal Leadership in 2007 while serving in the Diocese of Rio Grande.

- The Rev. Lewis (Lew) Powell, Deacon at St. John's, Chico
