Grants Awarded to St. John’s, Marysville

by St. John's, Marysville

St. John’s, Marysville recently received two Episcopal Church grants to expand their outreach ministries. Episcopal Community Services of Northern California (ECS) awarded St. John’s a grant of $5,000.00, enabling the church to hire a part-time Community Services Coordinator. As well as helping recruit and train volunteers, the Community Services Coordinator will contact local schools, businesses, clubs and agencies to “Adopt-a-Lunch,” so that St. John’s can host a Community Free Lunch every week. The church currently serves lunch once a month to between 80 and 100 people from their health-department certified kitchen.

In June, St. John’s was also awarded $5,000.00 from The Darby Betts Fund, established by Episcopal Senior Communities and the Episcopal Diocese of California to support senior service programs. At least 20% of the people who come to St. John’s for assistance with food are ages 60 or over. With few services for seniors available in Yuba County, the downtown church receives many requests for help and referrals from homeless, or precariously-housed seniors, and those in need of immediate help with food. The new Community Services Coordinator, salaried with funds from both Episcopal Church grants, will help locate services for these individuals, either at St. John’s or at other agencies in Yuba County.

St. John’s current outreach program, “Loaves & Britches,” consists of the Community Food Shelf, open three days a week; a monthly Community Free Lunch; a Clothes Closet; hosting the Regional Emergency Shelter Team for two weeks each year; and a Winter Shelter program for women and families with children. St. John’s is grateful for the two Episcopal Church grants that support the church’s mission: “To grow as the body of Christ, to serve our community and our world, through the gifts and the power of the Lord.”
