Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking

In the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California

by the Rev. Donnalee Hart, Deacon at St. Francis in the Redwoods, Willits

Sacramento. The very heart of our diocese. Number 2 of the top 5 worst human trafficking cities in our nation! When the Very Rev. Brian Baker made this statement at 2013 Diocesan Convention I was stunned. Surely this could not be true! But a quick Internet search confirmed this fact and more.

I was blessed to be able to attend the recent Province VIII Peace, Justice & Environmental Retreat along with four other representatives from our diocese. Human Trafficking was a major focus of this retreat, and it provided us with both educational resources and the opportunity to meet with others deeply involved in responding with the love of Christ to the terrible injustice of trafficking. I was astonished to discover just how widespread this problem is, rooted in all of our communities.

I urge you to put "Human Trafficking" in the search bar of our diocesan website. Check out www.polarisproject.org. There is so much good work being done. There are so many resources available. I believe the challenge before us now is to bring these resources into our deaneries, into our congregations. If this issue stirs your heart, please contact me! My email is donnalee@saber.net.
