Ninety-Seven Attend Life Planning Guide Workshop at St. Mary’s, Napa

The large crowd was a result of the hard work of the Rev. Canon Stephen Carpenter, church rector and Episcopal Foundation Board Member Jack Bellevue, a parishioner at St. Mary’s, who were eager to bring this presentation to the church.

The October 13 presentation featured the Foundation’s Marcie Larkey and three St. Mary’s parishioners who specialize in areas covered in the workshop. They include Chartered Life Underwriter Bellevue, St. Mary’s Foundation leader Lynn Hill, and Attorney Malcolm Mackenzie. The lively 3 hour workshop included interactive discussions on many topics, including: Making arrangements for your children, organizing those important papers, making sure someone knows where to find them, writing love letters to your family/friends, leaving the necessary information for your funeral and your obituary, preparing your Advance Directive, and the new POLST form, end-of-life choices, understanding Hospice, how to donate your organs, deciding who will receive your assets , the importance of having a will, and the difference between a will and a trust.

According to Bellevue, “It is estimated that as many as 55% of all Americans don’t even have a will. We just never seem to get our most important paperwork done or organized in one place so our loved one’s can find it should we become injured, sick, or worse.”

Now that the workshop is over, the real work has just begun. The attendees each have binders organized in 15 sections. Each section requires that they collect their lists, compilations of accounts, and other key paperwork, including final instructions and “loving letters” to friends and family. “It’s a very thorough guide,” Bellevue points out. “But it has to be used and the information collected by each individual in the way best suited to one’s own circumstances. It doesn’t all have to be done in a weekend. But it all really needs to be done.”
The evaluation comments for the program really say it all.

“The organization was great, the speakers knowledgeable and I am very glad to have all the printed information as a guideline.”

“It encouraged me to take action now to make it easier on my survivors.”

“Splendid presentation - professional, compassionate, caring, steady paced.”
