Making a Fresh Start

Making a Fresh Start

Newly ordained clergy as well as those who have recently made a transition into a new position gather regularly for a two-year program called “Fresh Start.”  Nearly 70 dioceses utilize this program, sponsored by The Episcopal Church Foundation, the Office of Transition Ministry and the CREDO Institute.

Recently the current group gathered for an overnight meeting at St. Barnabas, Mt. Shasta. Worship, sharing and study regarding “Decision Making” and “Role Identification” were interspersed with fabulous hospitality from St. Barnabas and their Priest-in-charge and Fresh Start participant, the Rev. Larry Holben.

The five current mentors and 12 participants represent the diversity of our diocese.  Fresh Start is available for newly ordained priests and deacons, as well as those who have recently begun a new ministry as a Rector, Vicar, Priest-in-charge, Assistant or a non-parochial position.  Along with the helpful material and exercises, one of the greatest benefits has been the increased connectivity among the clergy of the diocese.  Participants travel long distances to meet their colleagues in a variety of settings, including beautiful Mt. Shasta!

The Fresh Start curriculum has expanded to include modules for congregations in transition.  If you or your congregation would be interested in these resources, please contact the Rev. Canon Britt Olson,
