Many Voices, One Song Conference

Many Voices, One Song Conference

by the Rev. Larry Holben, Priest in Charge, St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, Mt. Shasta; Chair, Commission on Liturgy & Music

A Conference on Music in the Liturgy

Music lies at the heart of both the Anglican and Lutheran liturgical traditions. The well-known quotation “He who sings prays twice” (attributed, although erroneously, to St. Augustine of Hippo) speaks to the continuing importance of music in our worship.

On Friday and Saturday, September 23 and the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California and the Sierra Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American will be sponsoring, Many Voices, One Song: A Conference on Music in the Liturgy at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sacramento

The keynote speaker will be internationally recognized church organist, music director, cantor, conductor, composer and teacher, Dr. David Cherwien. Dr. Cherwien, a knowledgeable and engaging presenter, will speak to making creative use of the wide variety of musical possibilities available to congregations of any size today. He will also lead one of the workshops offered (on music for congregations without choirs or instrumentalists) and organize the music for a closing Eucharistic liturgy integrating elements of current worship materials from both Lutheran and Episcopalian resources.

This event is sponsored by the Commission on Liturgy & Music of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California and The Worship for Baptismal Living Discipling Team of the Sierra Pacific Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
