MDG Commission 2015 Grant Recipients

MDG Commission 2015 Grant Recipients

by the Rev. Lucretia Jevne, Priest-in-Partnership, St. Brigid's, Rio Vista; Member, Millennium Development Goals Commission

“What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
(Micah 6:8)

The Millennium Development Goal funds are a fixed item in the diocesan budget. They are in support of the United Nations program proposed in 2000 to reduce world poverty by 50% by the year 2015. In 2007, with resolution R1-07, our diocese voted to support the MDGs by designating 0.7% of our yearly budget to foster partnerships and work in other countries that meet one or more of these goals.

The latest UN report on the MDGs has affirmed that in many parts of the world this work is progressing and has led to a reduction in poverty and improvement in health and education. This year, the diocese has donated $12,875.00 to support this work, and has been able to fully fund the $12,728.00 in grant requests that we have received.

The Episcopal Diocese of Honduras

Support continues in our partnership with our companion diocese, The Episcopal Diocese of Honduras, with a $4000.00 grant to Holy Spirit Church in Tela for a special program. The Rev. Olga Barrera writes in her request that there is minimal health care for pregnant women and to many young girls are having children themselves. Her request is “to start, and maintain, a sex education program in our community, and to open a maternal health clinic at our church that is open at least two days per week, where mothers can receive prenatal and post-natal care.”

This girl is 16 years old, her baby is one year old and she is 7 months pregnant.

Liberia - The Liberian Schooling Project

Our diocese's relationship continues with Liberia also, through the work of the Rev. Dan Boeger, Deacon at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Gridley, and the Liberian Schooling Project. This year we have granted $ 2228.00 in support of the wife of one of the water well project people. She is in Liberia helping to teach sanitation and hygiene to women and girls in the villages supported by the Liberian Schooling Project.

The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem

In addition, the Ddocese is continuing to support The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem with a $2,000.00 grant, which Bishop Beisner will present to their bishop on the 2016 Holy Land Pilgrimage next January.

Global Episcopal Mission Network

Our official diocesan connection continues with the Global Episcopal Mission Network by contributing $500.00 for our diocesan membership.

Episcopal Relief & Development - Carry the Water

Episcopal Relief & Development will receive $3,000.00 in support of the “Carry the Water” program, as stated in a resolution passed at 2014 Diocesan Convention: “be it further resolved that The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California, as stewards of our environment and in the context of our own continuing and devastating drought conditions, will partner with Episcopal Relief & Development to bring safe and clean drinking water to our sisters and brothers in need and around the world by celebrating the 75th Anniversary Carry the Water campaign.”

Episcopal Relief & Development - The Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches

Finally, in light of the current dire refugee crisis in the Middle East, your committee has allocated $1,000.00 for Episcopal Relief & Development for a partner in the Middle East: The Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches (FMEEC). FMEEC’s primary goal in responding to the Syrian crisis is to equip safe regions to act as host communities to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. It is hoped that by helping those driven from their homes to stay where they are, they will be not be forced to flee under such desperate circumstances.

Thanks to all of you this life saving work of reducing poverty, increasing education and supporting better health care is continuing to bear fruit in our suffering and needy world.

Members of the MDG Commission are: Kim Andrup; the Rev. Andrea Baker; the Rev. Dan Boeger; Warren Dunning, the Rev. Lucretia Jevne and Jane Snibbe.
