Now Accepting MDG Grant Applications

by the Rev. Lucretia Jevne, Priest in Partnership, St. Brigid's, Rio Vista; Millennium Development Goals Steering Committee

Grant Deadline Extended: The Millennium Development Goal Committee announces a grant deadline extension until August 21st for submissions. Application and instructions are below.*

Millennium Development Goals: Making Poverty History

Thanks to the generosity of the people in our diocese 0.7% of our diocesan income is to be used for grants to congregations to help make poverty in the world history, by supporting projects that fulfill the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate extreme poverty, through education, empowering women, providing maternal health care and disease prevention, protect the environment and develop global partnerships for development.

We realize that 0.7% of our budget is not a great deal of money, considering the severe needs around the globe. However, our 0.7% together with the 0.7% of budgets from our congregations, other dioceses and countries around the world have made a tremendous difference since the inception of the Millennium Development Goals by the United Nations in 2000. Some joyful statistics and ongoing goals are:

- 600 million people have been helped to move out of extreme poverty.
- Goal: achieve universal primary education: by 2012 2 million fewer children were not in school
- Goal: Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger: by 2012 the Global poverty rate was reduced by half and the proportion of undernourished people has been reduced to 14%
- Goal: Ensure Environmental Sustainability: Protected ecosystems cover 14% of land and coastal areas around the world but climate change still needs to be addressed.
- Goal: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women: 117 countries passed wage equality laws; 46 countries have more the 30% women in their parliaments, but 2/3 of the illiterate populations are women.

You have a chance to contribute to this global work!*
