On The Riverbank With St. Brigid's

On The Riverbank With St. Brigid's

by Laura L. Delaney, Senior Warden of St. Brigid's in Rio Vista

On Sunday May 29th during our weekly service we had an award ceremony for some of the Cub Scouts in our community. These boys have just completed third grade. One of them, Eamonn, is a lifetime member of St. Brigid’s and he invited the other boys to join him. Each Cub Scout had attended four Sunday morning lessons with our deacon the Rev. Susan Reeve.

The program is called “God and Me” and it is the beginning level of an extensive four stage religious award program for school age scouts. The P.R.A.Y. Publishing Company produces the workbooks and other materials. Each boy was accompanied to the lessons by his parent, in full scouting uniform. The parents had their own mentor workbooks and there were activities and topics to work on separately and as a family. Some topics covered were: creation, incarnation, and prayer, all from the perspective that God loves me and Jesus can become my best friend.

What was truly touching was to watch these boys grow during their time at St. Brigid’s. Even more rewarding was watching them become part of the service on Awards Sunday. They brought the bread and wine to the table, and then passed the offering plates. This was done with joy and bright smiles on their lovely faces. Youth holds the future for all of us, and I was touched and blessed by these young scouts.
