Church bells rang the hour on a rainy Saturday as families filed into St. John's Episcopal Church in Petaluma, bundled in scarves and coats against the cold.

All the warmth inside didn't stop the congregants from from welling up with tears as the Rt. Rev. Barry Leigh Beisner, bishop of the Diocese of Northern California, replete in red robes that glittered with traces of gold, led the ordination of a new priest, and a longtime congregant, Mack Olson, who is openly gay.
