Rest, Refreshment, and Relaxation

Rest, Refreshment, and Relaxation

by Christine Richardson of St. Nicholas', Tahoe City

Above St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, Tahoe City is space that over the years had been used for various purposes including lodging, offices, and counseling center. By the 2000s the areas were tired, dark and depressing and were reluctantly used by Camp Noel Porter visiting priests. In 2007 the St. Nicholas community decided to modernize and upgrade the area and then offer the space, free of charge, to people in the diocese who need a break. The initial project cost well over $6,000 with part of the funding coming from an Episcopal Community Services grant and the rest of the funding from the St. Nicholas community.

Two comfortable apartments were created. One apartment, the Bear’s Lair, is a light and bright room for one or two. It has a coffee nook and a private bath. The other apartment, the Blue Lagoon, is a larger bed-sit with a queen and a set of bunk beds. Outside of the two apartments is another sitting area overlooking the aspen grove. Books, games, devotional materials, and movies are readily available. There are no phones, cable, or satellite in the units, ensuring a private get a way.

These spaces are available free of charge to anyone in the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California in need of a break. The typical occupant is a priest or church staff member who needs to get away for a few days, but doesn’t necessarily have the financial resources to come to Lake Tahoe. The comments we receive from people who stay there are: the space is healing, the mountains feels close to God, the wind in the pine trees soothes the soul…

Recently, members of St. Nicholas again upgraded the units with some new furnishings and accessories and the rooms look great. We can still use: new queen sized linens in either cream, blue, or green; a queen sized bed skirt in cream or green; new white, blue, or red towels; and spiritual books and DVD’s.

Thank you to everyone who has helped with this project over the last few months!!
