Special Needs Ministry Lights Up

Special Needs Ministry Lights Up

by Maria Johnston, Social Needs Ministries Chair, St. James', Lincoln

Faith is a vital part of our daily lives. But sadly, families of special needs children often have nowhere to worship. Whether because of their children’s behavioral challenges or even their own fear of rejection, parents find themselves isolated from their churches at a time when they need them most.

With the hope of ministering to these precious families, St. James' Episcopal Church in Lincoln is blessed to announce the creation of a Special Needs Ministry. Together in Christ, we hope to provide a warm and nurturing environment where parents and afflicted children can find comfort and spiritual respite.

In honor of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2015, St James' will be turning blue as part of the global Light it Up Blue autism awareness campaign. This campaign shines the light on autism, as a lifelong developmental disorder that affects 1 in 68 children. St. James', Lincoln will also be offering the following three events during April to promote autism awareness in our community:

- Wednesday, April 1st at 10:00 a.m.: St. James' will offer a special service in honor of the 70 million people world-wide who struggle with autism.

- Saturday, April 11th at 12 noon: St. James' will be hosting a luncheon, followed by an informational talk, to help foster a better understanding of autism and how to help affected families.

- Saturday, April 25th at 10:00 a.m.: St. James' will offer a special needs service for children and their families, followed by an informal refreshment and play-time in Martin Hall.

All are welcome to attend these special services. Thank you for your support and God bless you all!

If you are interested in assisting with the planning of these functions, please contact Maria Johnston via phone at 916-303-0120 or via email at mjmof3@yahoo.com.

We here at St James are so excited that this article has been included in the diocese e- news!

I have to make one very important correction; I submitted the article but this well-written article was written by the Soecial Needs Ministries chair Maria Johnston.

Looking forward to our Special Needs Service on this Saturday April 25th!
