Diocese Receives the Rev. Steven Moore

Bishop Beisner Presides Over Steve Paul Moore’s Reception Into Holy Orders

by St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Napa

The Right Reverend Barry L. Beisner led a number of priests and deacons and a church full of parishioners, in rites receiving the Rev. Steven Paul Moore into the priesthood of the Episcopal Church at a 7 p.m. service Tuesday, October 30, at historic St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Napa.

Trained as a Jesuit, the Rev. Moore converted to the Episcopal faith in 2010 but could not serve as a priest until he had been received into Holy Orders of the Church. He will now become assistant priest at St. Mary’s, serving three-quarter time while he completes his doctorate in clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco.

Before the formal reaffirmation of vows led by Bishop Beisner, the Rev. Ernest L. Lewis welcomed his former fellow student at Berkeley’s Church Divinity School of the Pacific to ministry in the Episcopal Church. The Rev. Lewis recounted Moore’s many strengths – great insight into people, calm, gentle manner, and “your heart – the heart of a pastor.” He ended his sermon with a challenge to imagine what “God envisions for your ministry in this place” and a benediction: “May you have joy.”

While new to St. Mary’s, Fr. Moore is no newcomer to Napa, having served as a therapist at Napa’s Aldea Family Services Program until recently. He is the fourth person to participate in St. Mary’s mentoring program for young priests – the only program of its kind in the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California. We welcome Steve into our diocesan family.
