Unpacking the 2015 Freedom Ride

Unpacking the 2015 Freedom Ride

by Anne Clarke, Co-Leader, 2015 Freedom Ride; Lifelong Christian Faith Formation Coordinator, The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California

It was a fantastic experience to accompany nine young people from around our diocese, along with the Rev. Sarah Quinney and Bishop Barry Beisner, to North Carolina for the Lift Every Voice 2015 Freedom Ride Pilgrimage. We learned so much about slavery, discrimination and the Civil Rights movement, and visited key sites related to them all. To learn more about our pilgrimage experiences and read articles about the places we visited and people we met, please click here: www.norcalepiscopal.org/2015-freedom-ride-youth-and-young-adult-pilgrimage.

The youth participants have already begun to share their insights, ideas and experiences with their congregations and deaneries. This sharing will continue during the coming months, as we find ways to bring what we learned back to Northern California. In addition, we are in the early stages of planning a local pilgrimage in Northern California. Please stay tuned for updates! (Pictured above are the Northern California pilgrims with Presiding Bishop-Elect Michael Curry).

In the meantime, you can access resources for launching discussions in your own congregations about these issues here: www.norcalepiscopal.org/freedom-ride-taking-it-home. If you have any questions or want to be a part of the next phase of this work, please contact Anne Clarke, Lifelong Christian Formation Coordinator, at anne@norcalepiscopal.org or 916-442-6918 ext. 215.
