Those of you who attend the annual Congregational Leadership Conferences know that I always begin the Treasurers’ Workshop by thanking each of you for the important contribution you make toward fulfilling the mission of the church. Vestries need high quality information in order to make sound decisions in these uncertain times and they count on your monthly reports to keep them up to date on the financial status of the congregation.
Whether you have been a Treasurer for many years or you are new to the job it can be helpful to establish a job description as a point of reference for self-evaluation and as a tool for communicating your role to others.
The Episcopal Church Foundation publishes “The Vestry Resource Guide” to help clergy and lay leaders understand their specific roles and work together more effectively to achieve common goals. This guide covers a number of topics such as congregational mission, vestry structure, managing conflict, stewardship, and clergy transition. It includes comprehensive job descriptions for specific vestry roles, including Treasurer, which you can fine tune for use at your church.
I have free copies of “The Vestry Resource Guide” available to send at no charge to the first five people who respond to me via email at bobbi@norcalepiscopal.org. If you don’t reply in time to get a free copy you can order one by clicking here. The cost is only $12 for a single copy or $10 each for 10 copies or more.
