Vietnam, World War II Veterans Receive Honors

Four veterans from Davis were honored for their military service on Wednesday by Rep. Wally Herger, who represents a portion of Yolo County, and Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada, D-Davis. Receiving the Special Congressional Recognition Awards and California Assembly Awards were Lt. Col. Avis Showers, Merchant Marine Robert Ulrich and Army Sgts. Frank Chacon and Francis Resta.
Showers devoted 22 years helping the sick and the injured as a member of the Air Force Nurse Corps. Her skills won her many accolades during her service as chief nurse at military hospitals all over the globe. She cared for injured returnees from Vietnam, including prisoners of war. In Showers’ position of chief nurse at Edwards Air Force Base, she worked on the planning for the first landing of the space shuttle.
