Winning the Ebola Fight in Liberia

Winning the Ebola Fight in Liberia

by the Rev. Dan Boeger, Deacon, St. Timothy's, Gridley

In response to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of 2014, a grant of $3,000.00 was awarded to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Gridley to assist with an anti-Ebola campaign in Liberia.

Specifically, the MDG grant money that was sent to Liberia was used to purchase and deliver Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as aprons, gloves, goggles and Clorox disinfectant for fighting Ebola. When these items were delivered to remote villages, the local nurse in charge of the village clinic, and all villagers, were instructed on the following:

1) Ebola is Real (not a hoax),
2) How to avoid contracting Ebola
3) How to identify and quarantine infected villagers

By this very early effort, absolutely zero cases of Ebola occurred in Panta District of Bong County, in spite of Ebola cases and Ebola deaths to the north, south, east and west of Panta District. This area of the Panta District is a rain forest with 26 villages and about 70,000 villagers.

In addition, this Ebola prevention and education program became the model for all of Bong County and, to some extent, for all of Liberia. Bong County is the home of The Episcopal Church’s Cuttington University with its School of Nursing. We are now also engaged in a program to provide housing and schooling to orphans from Ebola deaths in other regions of Bong county.

Phil Mulford, member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Auburn, is currently traveling with his wife to Panta District. Phil will be teaching the villagers how to use a Lone Star water well drilling rig that we will be shipping to them very soon. This rig will enable the remote Liberian villagers to have more clean water in their villages, schools and medical clinics in the very near future. Pictured above (at right) are team members in Gridley learning to use this village size drill.

Thank you for your support of all of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) programs, and this successful anti-Ebola campaign in Liberia.
