SUMMARY:Dean of Coventry to Visit Trinity Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:The Very Rev. John Witcombe\, Dean of Coventry Cathedral in the UK\, will be our guest preacher Sunday Nov. 9 at all service 7:30 am\, 9 am. He will be accompanied by his wife\, Ricarda\, who is also a priest in the Church of England. \nDean Witcombe will be here to induct Trinity Cathedral as partners in the Community of the Cross of Nails\, which is an international network primarily of Anglican and Episcopal churches and cathedrals dedicated to social justice issues. \nHe will also speak at forum at 10:15 am that Sunday. \nThe Community of the Cross of Nails grew from the wreckage of World War II and the destruction Coventry Cathedral. The thousand-year-old cathedral was completely destroyed Nov. 14\, 1940\, by German bombers. The next day\, Dick Howard\, Coventry’s Provost (Dean) at the time\, pledged that the cathedral would commit itself to forgiveness\, and ultimately\, reconciliation. \nTwo charred roof-beams and three medieval nails were found in the rubble in the shape of a cross. These became potent symbols of Howard’s pledge. Replicas of the cross are presented to member congregations at their induction. \nAfter the war\, Coventry formed a partnership with former enemies in Dresden where that medieval cathedral had been destroyed by British bombers. This partnership began to extend to other Christian communities\, forming the Community of the Cross of Nails. There are now more than 250 such partners worldwide. \nThe mission of the Community of the Cross of Nails: \n\nHealing the wounds of history\nLearning to live with difference and celebrate diversity\nBuilding a culture of justice and peace\n\nDean Witcomb’s visit is the culmination of work by our Justice And Mercy team (JAM) developing our application to join this network. Our next steps will be to continue living into our mission.

SUMMARY:McGill University doctoral student plays organ concert Nov. 14 in Healdsburg
DESCRIPTION:St. Paul’s “Mostly Third Sunday” concert series takes a short detour this month\, with the concert occurring on Friday\, Nov. 14. McGill University doctoral student Collin Miller will play organ masterpieces by Schumann\, Brahms\, Buxtehude\, Rachel Laurin\, Ethel Smyth\, Franz Schmidt and J.S. Bach. The 6 p.m. concert is co-sponsored by the Redwood Empire Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. \nA native of Lafayette\, Louisiana\, Miller received his master’s degree at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. A frequent competitor in international pipe-organ festivals\, he was a finalist in the 2021 St. Albans International Organ Competition. He is noted for seeking and playing neglected and challenging repertoire\, among it the organ solo music of English/Parsi composer Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji (1892-1988). \nSt. Pauls’ Bigelow pipe organ was installed five years ago and has since been the setting of this concert series. Church leaders decided to offer the series as a gift so locals could hear classical music in a comfortable\, local setting\, at no cost. Admission remains free. Donations to the church’s building maintenance fund are not mandatory but are gratefully accepted. \nThe church is located at the corner of East and Matheson Streets\, one block east of Healdsburg’s downtown Plaza. Those who cannot attend the live performance may hear it later on the church’s YouTube channel; consult the church website at  http://www.stpauls-healdsburg.org and click the “Watch and Listen” link. \nContact stpaulschurchpr@gmail.com  with any questions.

SUMMARY:Healing the Neighborhood Webinar: Faith in Action in Del Paso Heights
DESCRIPTION:Is your church looking for ways to “Repair the Breach” to heal the inequities that have happened as a result of generations of systemic racism and poverty? Partnering with the Neighborhood Wellness Foundation (NW) may be just what you are seeking. \nCo-founded in 2015 by Dr. Gina Warren and Marilyn Woods\, NW was established with the goal of creating an integrated approach to community healing and empowerment in the community of Del Paso Heights. The organization works to disrupt cycles of violence\, addiction\, and poor health outcomes by offering programs like Healing Circles\, providing resources for education and employment\, and fostering relationships with agencies that serve the community. \nAs the impact of NW has grown in Del Paso Heights\, this organization has become involved in new ways in the elementary school and middle school. There are many ways you are invited to participate in this outreach. To find out more\, please join us in a Webinar on Saturday\, November 22nd\, from 10:00-11:00 am. We will briefly look at how St. John’s Roseville’s partnership with NW is evolving\, see a video with testimonials from community members\, hear from CEO Gina Warren and CFO Marilyn Woods about their vision for the future\, and have some time to ask questions of the NW leadership. \nRSVP: Please click on this link to register \nCost: Free webinar

SUMMARY:Advent Lessons and Carols at Church of St. Martin
DESCRIPTION:the Episcopal Church of St. Martin will offer a candlelit Advent Lessons and Carols\, the beloved service of Scripture and song that invites us to prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming. This year’s service includes a unique element: selected reflections from Native North American poets and philosophers\, placed alongside the traditional Lessons. These readings are not presented as parallel sacred texts\, but as thoughtful illuminations—ways of hearing the Advent story through the wisdom of cultures that have lived on this land far longer than anyone else. By engaging with voices outside our own tradition\, we hope to listen more deeply to the Scriptures and to all our neighbors.\nThe music for this service will include choral anthems and piano music by Native American composers\, including Andrew Balfour’s Wyandot’s Realm\, a striking re-imagining of the well-known Jesuit missionary song\, Huron Carol\, which inspired this service. Balfour\, an Indigenous Canadian composer\, created this work as an act of reclamation\, honoring the vanished Wyandot people while addressing the complicated colonial history behind the original carol. Sung alongside traditional hymns and carols\, the beautiful and culturally striking choral anthems offer poignant musical meditations on longing\, hope\, and renewal. All are warmly invited to join us for this reflective and beautiful beginning to Advent.\n\n\nSt. Martin’s is located at 640 Hawthorn Lane\, Davis\, CA 95616.

SUMMARY:St. Paul's Church Presents of "Lessons and Carols"
DESCRIPTION:The musicians of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church present a traditional “Lessons and Carols” concert at 5 p.m. Sunday\, Dec. 21\, at the church in Healdsburg. The public is welcome to attend and sing traditional Christmas carols while hearing the St. Paul’s choir accompanied by Music Director Paul Blanchard playing the Bigelow pipe organ. \n\n“Lessons and Carols”  tells the story of the fall of humanity\, the promise of the Messiah\, and the birth of Jesus in nine short Bible readings interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols\, hymns and choir anthems. The service was first performed in 1880 in Cornwall\, and it slowly spread throughout Great Britain. It was first performed at King’s College\, Cambridge\, in 1918. The service has been held every year since and is broadcast on radio and television. The service was first performed in the United States in 1916.\n\n\nSt. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located at the corner of East and Matheson Streets\, one block east of Healdsburg’s downtown Plaza.

SUMMARY:America’s Best Idea: The Separation of Church and State

He is also a New York Times bestselling author and a CNN Contributor. He is the author of eighteen books\, including Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter; Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right and Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America\, which was made into an award-winning\, three-part series for PBS. His commentaries on religion in America appear in newspapers across the country\, including the Los Angeles Times\, the Washington Post\, the Concord Monitor\, the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. \nHis latest book\, America’s Best Idea: The Separation of Church and State\, examines the history behind the First Amendment and argues that church-state separation has ensured both political stability and a vibrant religious culture in the United States. Those who would compromise the First Amendment—Christian nationalists\, the Supreme Court—risk undermining one of the foundational principles in American society. \nMonday evenings\, February 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, from 6:30-7:15.
