SUMMARY:Advent Lessons and Carols at Church of St. Martin
DESCRIPTION:the Episcopal Church of St. Martin will offer a candlelit Advent Lessons and Carols\, the beloved service of Scripture and song that invites us to prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming. This year’s service includes a unique element: selected reflections from Native North American poets and philosophers\, placed alongside the traditional Lessons. These readings are not presented as parallel sacred texts\, but as thoughtful illuminations—ways of hearing the Advent story through the wisdom of cultures that have lived on this land far longer than anyone else. By engaging with voices outside our own tradition\, we hope to listen more deeply to the Scriptures and to all our neighbors.\nThe music for this service will include choral anthems and piano music by Native American composers\, including Andrew Balfour’s Wyandot’s Realm\, a striking re-imagining of the well-known Jesuit missionary song\, Huron Carol\, which inspired this service. Balfour\, an Indigenous Canadian composer\, created this work as an act of reclamation\, honoring the vanished Wyandot people while addressing the complicated colonial history behind the original carol. Sung alongside traditional hymns and carols\, the beautiful and culturally striking choral anthems offer poignant musical meditations on longing\, hope\, and renewal. All are warmly invited to join us for this reflective and beautiful beginning to Advent.\n\n\nSt. Martin’s is located at 640 Hawthorn Lane\, Davis\, CA 95616.

SUMMARY:St. Paul's Church Presents of "Lessons and Carols"
DESCRIPTION:The musicians of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church present a traditional “Lessons and Carols” concert at 5 p.m. Sunday\, Dec. 21\, at the church in Healdsburg. The public is welcome to attend and sing traditional Christmas carols while hearing the St. Paul’s choir accompanied by Music Director Paul Blanchard playing the Bigelow pipe organ. \n\n“Lessons and Carols”  tells the story of the fall of humanity\, the promise of the Messiah\, and the birth of Jesus in nine short Bible readings interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols\, hymns and choir anthems. The service was first performed in 1880 in Cornwall\, and it slowly spread throughout Great Britain. It was first performed at King’s College\, Cambridge\, in 1918. The service has been held every year since and is broadcast on radio and television. The service was first performed in the United States in 1916.\n\n\nSt. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located at the corner of East and Matheson Streets\, one block east of Healdsburg’s downtown Plaza.

SUMMARY:America’s Best Idea: The Separation of Church and State
DESCRIPTION:Randall Balmer\, an Episcopal priest and part-time resident of Gualala\, is the John Phillips Professor in Religion at Dartmouth College. He is also a New York Times bestselling author and a CNN Contributor. He is the author of eighteen books\, including Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter; Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right and Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America\, which was made into an award-winning\, three-part series for PBS. His commentaries on religion in America appear in newspapers across the country\, including the Los Angeles Times\, the Washington Post\, the Concord Monitor\, the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. \nHis latest book\, America’s Best Idea: The Separation of Church and State\, examines the history behind the First Amendment and argues that church-state separation has ensured both political stability and a vibrant religious culture in the United States. Those who would compromise the First Amendment—Christian nationalists\, the Supreme Court—risk undermining one of the foundational principles in American society. \nMonday evenings\, February 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, from 6:30-7:15.
