Education for Ministry

You may have heard about Education for Ministry (EFM). Your church may have an active program or maybe you’d like to get one going and don’t know where to begin. In either case there is something new in EFM! Here is an overview of the program and a contact for more information.

  • 4-part seminar program lead by trained mentors
  • Meets weekly on Zoom or in person
  • 36 weeks for 2½ to 3 hours each
  • One year at a time
  • 2+ hours homework per week
  • The group consists of 6-12 members per seminar + mentor and co-mentor.

THE PROGRAM

1. WORSHIP Everyone contributes to group prayer. The meeting is a sacred space where norms are agreed upon and nothing said inside is repeated outside. Prayers are shared from our Episcopal tradition and from a world-wide variety of other sources.

2. LEARNING

  • Must have access to computer, internet, and ability to log onto a learning platform.

There are two tracks for learning:

Classic EFM is a four-year course studying one subject per year. The years are taken in succession, but participants can take years off between each section.

  • Year One – The Hebrew Bible
  • Year Two – The New Testament
  • Year Three – Christian History
  • Year Four – Theology and Ethics

Wide Angle EFM is a new one-year program, in which participants study each of the above topics in 6-week          sections. The reading is a little lighter and more accessible than in the Classic program. It’s perfect those who have graduated from EFM and those who want an overview of the subjects.

In addition, throughout the year everyone reads or watches videos in common that support an over-arching theme of the year. An example of a theme is: Living into the Journey with God.

3. REFLECTION Theological Reflection is really the core of EFM. TR’s allow participants to have deep meaningful guided conversations on an unlimited range of topics. The topic is discussed from a variety of angles helping participants begin to understand and articulate their faith and how God works in their lives. In general, these are conversations that one will not have anywhere else.

4. FELLOWSHIP During the year members get to know one another and form deep friendships. It is said that people come to EFM for the Learning and stay for the Fellowship!

Cost: $350.00 registration fee (diocesan sponsor rate and includes service charge)

Books – $100 (participants buy their own books in whatever format they prefer)

How to Get Involved

Rectors

EFM participants become the core of the church community as they build relationships, develop a mature faith and discern their personal ministry. Most EFM Members become more active in various ministries within the church.
