Job Title: Missioner for Communications

Job Summary: As a key member of the Office of the Bishop Staff, the Missioner for Communications is responsible for shaping the Diocesan communications strategy and tactics. Working closely with the Bishop and the Canon to the Ordinary, this position is also accountable for providing resources to congregations to build and strengthen their communication tools and strategy.

Typical Essential Duties: (These duties are a representative sample)

● Serves as Diocesan webmaster: manage the website in a way that keeps content current and promotes both events and key messages developed with the bishop and others

● Produces, edits, and publishes weekly Diocesan e-newsletter and monthly clergy newsletter, as well as annual update of clergy directory

● Develops, implements, and manages Diocesan marketing campaigns

● Produces communications and technical resources for Diocesan events, such as Diocesan Convention, Congregational Leadership Conferences, and Clergy Conference

● Oversees Diocesan social media strategy and execution, ensuring a lively virtual presence on various platforms

● Consults with congregations across the Diocese on church websites

● Strengthen communication hubs in each deanery, building capacity and focusing on creating a network of publication and image communication leaders in each parish

● Partners with the Missioner for Disaster Resilience for crisis communications

● Recruits, rebuilds, and works with members of the Communications Committee on overall strategy

● Develops and manages communications budget and approves expenses

● Serves as news media manager on behalf of the Bishop and the Diocese

● Manages branding and style for the Diocese on all communications deliverables

● Makes recommendations regarding communications technology and use at the Office of the Bishop and around the Diocese

● Attend regular meetings at the Office of the Bishop (Sacramento, CA)

● Active participation in the Episcopal Communicators peer group

Training & Experience:

● 3 – 5 years proven ability/experience in hands-on print and digital communications, media relations, social media or relevant experience

● Ability to work on tight deadlines under pressure and to react quickly to time-sensitive events

● Degree in English, journalism or related discipline emphasizing communications skills

● Must be able to adjust personal schedule to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as necessary

Licensing Requirements:

Must have a valid California driver’s license, access to transportation, and insurance to mandated state requirements

Knowledge (proficiency at entry):

● Hands-on experience with the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, Acrobat) is required
● Strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows OS, including PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel
● Experience with WordPress and Wix website platforms
● Bilingual (Spanish) strongly desired
● An understanding of religious faith and how faith shapes politics and culture (a plus)
● Strategic thinking with strong writing and editing skills
● Experience in and knowledge of the nonprofit sector
● A firm knowledge of how the news media works
● Some familiarity with the world of the Episcopal Church preferred
Skills (proficiency at entry)
The successful candidate will be:
● Experienced at managing Zoom as a large-group communications tool
● Adept in crisis communications
● Knowledgeable about trends in marketing and media; able to recognize the impact of new technologies and platforms and how best to use these to drive brand and business performance
● Highly proficient at WordPress website management and design
● Capable of performing basic video capture and editing
● Experienced with Constant Contact
● Effective at collaboration across teams and with outside vendors
● Available to work evenings and weekends
● Able to travel independently throughout the Diocese
● Familiar with podcast creation, editing and publishing skills (a plus)
● Able to translate written and oral communications (English/Spanish) (strongly preferred)
● Collaborative and a strong team contributor
● Flexible and curious
● Skilled at working with diverse populations and cultures

Location: In person, may be partially remote.
Salary: $80,000/year with generous benefits
